Warren St. Marks Community Garden Movie Night
Wednesday, August 19, 7:30 pm (Raindate: Saturday, August 22, 7:30 pm)
It’s a New York romance, it’s a comedy, it’s a creepy horror film, it’s a musical - and more! It’s about performance art, about eminent domain, about community gardening…. it’s… it’s…
IT’S JOE’S APARTMENT!
Rated pg-13. Outrageous enough to offend some adults; audacious enough to delight all children.
For those of you not in the know, “A**” refers to Arm. So, um, get your arm over to the garden this Saturday morning! Here are some of the compelling reasons why you should be there:
A Compost Workshop will be lead by our resident compost pros, Kate and Rico. Make sure to ask them about the rumor of a compost tumbler made from a repurposed bike. Wow, repurposing with a repurposed bike!
At noon, head back to the picnic area to learn Pickling Techniques from Jerah. Fingers crossed-she’ll bring more of her amazing pickled veggies from home, as she did for the first demonstration earlier this summer. Ya know, Jerah should call this International Pickling Techniques as she honed her pickling skills while living about zillions of places all around the world.
If this is not enough to get you out of bed before noon on Saturday, how about a little drama? I heard the mystery of Trouble in the Land of Zucchini may be unraveled. Not sure of the plot line but it sounds like a good one!
Still not intrigued and feeling that 10am on Saturday is too early to be social? There’s always a need for solitary weeding, digging and hauling. All socials types will be accommodated.
Saturday, August 8th starting at 10AM.

The following is a letter written by the president of the Baltic Street Community Garden, Julie Claire, to the School Construction Authority (SCA) regarding the future bulldozing of the Baltic Street Community Garden.
————————————-
Dear Ms. Knight, Mr. Maley, and the SCA,
I am writing to you and the SCA on behalf of the Baltic Street Community Garden members. We have a number of concerns regarding both the current and future gardens on the PS 133 site in Brooklyn, and I have outlined them below. We look forward to scheduling a meeting with the SCA to discuss these concerns and questions and to decide how we can best move forward together on these issues. This meeting will be separate and independent of the promised meeting between the neighborhood and the SCA prior to commencement of excavation and/or construction.

7/29/09
Place: The Garden
Present: Pat McCarty, Kathy Hutson, Makale Cullen, Valerie English, Ruth Chasek, Naomi Chasek-Macfoy
We approved having a wedding in the garden (new members Natalie Schiavo and Craig Schoenbaum). It will take place September 6th – a ceremony only, with about 15 guests. Wedding party will move on to Convivium Osteria, where they will have their celebration. Bride and groom understand that per garden rules, the ceremony will be open to all garden members, and that no alcohol will be served. Bride requests that no one barbecue during the ceremony (approximately 3:30 to 4:30pm ), as she doesn’t want smoke wafting over the proceedings. Congratulations to the first garden members to tie the knot in the garden!

Attention all Garden Members:
You are cordially invited to participate in the 2009 Garden Mosaics Training Workshop, sponsored by Cornell University Cooperative Extension. The Warren-St. Marks Community Garden will pay for the first three garden members who register and attend the workshop. Contact Pat at [email protected] for more information.
This is a wonderful, day-long training session for gardeners and educators or anyone who is interested in bringing youth and adults together to explore science, nature, community and the environment in a garden setting.
This year’s Garden Mosaic Training Workshop will enable participants to learn about the Garden Mosaic program, how to use model projects and guides on the Garden Mosaic website, explore and then carry out hands-on indoor and outdoor activities as you would actually implement them in dynamic, creative inter-generational projects. Garden Mosaics is not a gardening program, but a learning-about-what-goes-on-in-a-garden program. The learning is both about the science of gardening as well as about the multi-cultural and social aspects of community gardening.
The morning session of the program will take place indoors at the Prospect Hill Senior Service Center, 283 Prospect Avenue (same location as St. John – St. Matthew – Emanuel Lutheran Church), in Park Slope, Brooklyn and the afternoon session will take place at nearby 6/15 Green - A Community Garden, located at 6th Avenue & 15th Street.
On Saturday and Sunday, the compost bin building crew (Kate, Pat, Rico, Jerah and Perrin) joined forces digging, sawing, measuring and drilling. Bravo guys-the end result is beautiful! Looking forward to dumping chunks of rotten cucumbers and funky old carrots in the new compost “corral”.
