“Behold this compost! behold it well! … It grows such sweet things out of such corruptions.” -Walt whitman
The WSMCG thrives on fresh, rich compost made right here at home in our multi-tiered composting system. Our bins are teeming with beneficial bacteria, munching microorganisms, powerhouse potato-bugs, and multiple species of writhing, glorious worms–including the true champion of waste reduction, the red wiggler! They all work together alongside heat, aerobic respiration, and moisture to break down our organic waste and turn it into black gold. That compost nurtures the soil in our plots, the plots grow our vegetables, the vegetables produce scraps, the scraps are added to the compost, and round and round it goes. Even the chickens reap the rewards when given the opportunity to scratch around in the open bins–and drop a few beautiful, nitrogen-laden turds in the process.
The WSMCG welcomes kitchen scraps from members and non-members alike. Members are invited to pop by any time with their offerings–while non-members are of course welcome to drop off scraps whenever the gates are open. Please only add to the container saying “Add Compost Here.” Sprinkle some wood shavings on the top from one of the smaller tubs and you’re done! Our devoted compost turners, The Happy Few Compost Team, will do the rest.
